Why Land Design?

Land Design is a small company; we like it that way!  You’ll only deal with John or Laura Kelly.  You won’t call us and get someone on the phone who doesn’t know who you are.

We get to know our clients, their homes, and their families.  We don’t produce “cookie cutter” plans that change only slightly between clients.

We have a team of trusted contractors who help us bring our designs to life under our close supervision.

Who is John Kelly?

John has worked in the landscape design / build industry right here in the Capital District for over 24 years.

As a child he spent many hours helping his grandparents tend their gardens in Westchester County and has a true love of seeing things grow and thrive.

As a college major in Fine Arts he studied all of the elements of design: color, shape, form and space.

Moving to the Capital District in the 80s he spent 15 years at Faddegon’s Nursery in Latham, NY as a foreman, estimator, and designer.

In 2003 he began this business after seeing the need for landscape design-only services in this area.

In recent years, the business has expanded to offer the option of complete installation of our designs. We’ve always made our highest priority to be providing good design and being our clients’ advocate.

John’s enthusiasm for every project, large or small, is still evident when you meet with him.

Who is Laura Kelly?

Laura has a varied design background. Growing up she enjoyed art, interior decorating and photography shared with her mom. While contemplating a career in landscape architecture, Laura met John while working at Faddegon’s. After they married, Laura obtained a degree in Interior Design from the Sage Colleges in Albany, NY and enjoys working in both industries.

Laura has worked as a designer and operations manager for a number of Capital District kitchen and bath design firms since 2001. While having a talent for clean design she also strongly considers functionality, practicality & Universal design.

She brings her talents in space planning and aesthetics to all of our outdoor room projects. Pools, patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens all require space planning; simply throwing a patio here and a few plants there can lend itself to an uncomfortable space to be in. How a client lives in their “space” and how they are able to maintain their property whether it’s decided by time, health or budget, are all factors to be considered. Meeting the client’s criteria is a challenge she looks forward to.

Laura’s talents dovetail beautifully with John’s field experience and extensive plant knowledge.
